Before retiring in 2012, Marka Burns taught art education at California State University at Long Beach for 32 years. In 1984, she began teaching art part-time at Eldorado Emerson and since 1990 has been working with Dr. Wendy LaGreen to proudly build the art program into what it is today.
Mrs. Burns received her Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from the Chouinard Art Institute (now Cal Arts) in 1968. After graduation she studied painting and art history in Munich, Germany and Oslo, Norway. Returning to California, she earned a Masters of Fine Arts in Visual Arts in 1976. She has taught drawing and creative workshops through university extension programs at Cal State Long Beach as well as the University of California, San Bernardino, UC Riverside and UC Irvine. Further, she worked with Dr. Betty Edwards, author of the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, training teachers in Europe, Asia and the United States.
Her own personal work is on display in numerous private and corporate collections. Mrs. Burns is currently painting in her studio, observing student teachers in middle and high school classrooms and, of course, continuing to inspire students at Eldorado Emerson.
